You may think this is a no-brainer, "Everyone is my target audience!" But they aren’t, and couldn’t possibly be, unless you had an unlimited marketing budget. If you’re a plumber, not everyone with plumbing is your target audience. Think about the clients you already have, are they your ideal client? No? Then they're not your target audience. Do you specialize in commercial properties? Or complexes with multiple units? Get to know your local commercial realtors, they are a great resource! Likewise, look for property or building managers who need to be able to give you a call at a moment's notice so prevent damage. This may also bring up more opportunities. Do I offer water removal? Carpet cleaning or restoration? Should you? Should you expand your business to be a one-stop-shop? These are all things to consider when you're growing your business, and ultimately, expanding your audience.
Finding your target audience is essential to your marketing strategy. You don’t market for clients you already have, you market to the ones you want. Your dream jobs, the people you want to work with the most. Now, not everyone is a plumber. Are you a CPA or accountant? What types of industries do you love to work with the most? Target them. Use whatever marketing budget you have to go after the clients you wish you had. It doesn’t have to be a lot, maybe you just need to find the right networking group or referral system to get in front of the right people.
